Located 170km south of Sofia, Bansko is 2.5 hours drive from Sofia International Airport. However, once you get there the town feels like a place of medievel enchantment. Bansko serves as a gateway to the Pirin Mountains, a spectacular mountain range with Lakes, Waterfalls and Majestic Peaks, deep Caves, Thermal Springs and magical Alpine Forests with trees over 1000 years old, There is also a wild bear sanctuary nearby, where the native brown bear is rescued. The Pirin National Park is included in the list of UNESCO preservation projects for having exceptional national and historic value. As the fame of this mountain resort has spread internationally over the past few years, the region of Bansko has attracted an unpresidented number of tourist and investors. The influx of visitors has prompted the construction of many new developments of vacation properties, who's supply still cannot satisfy the high demand. Bansko offers great ski conditions and easy access to the ski runs. The town itself is situated 925m above sea level, the ski area at 2000 - 2500m. The new gondola lift takes skiers directly from the town up the mountain. The growth of the tourism industry has prompted the construction of many new lifts, ski runs and tracks in the ski area. Because of the high elevations the winter sports season in Bansko can extend as late as the spring. Bansko is Bulgarias premier ski resort having the best and most modern ski centre of all the Bulgarian resorts. During the recent years, multi million euro investments in a brand new skiing area have been made by Yulen, the company which holds the license to run the skiing area of the resort. Bansko has the best snow record and the longest ski season ( 15th December - 15 May ) of all the resorts. During the last couple of years, Bansko has undergone a massive investment process and many new hotels and resort facilities have been constructed. The ski pistes are located in two main ski centres, CHALIN VALOG ( 1100 - 1600m. ) and SHILIGARNIKA ( 1700 - 2500m. ) via the new gondola which starts from Bansko. The total length of the marked Pistes is 65km. 44 Technoalpine snow cannons cover most of the slopes and make the ski season last longer. Maximum pleasure and usability is guaranteed by 12 KASSBOHRER slope maintenance vehicles. The slope offer runs and tracks for skiers of all levels and suit both beginners and experts, and both slalom and giant slalom runs are available. Bansko also features a cross-country track with a total length of 5km. A 3km ski run 'ROLLBAHN' track is situated 2km away from the town. Huge monitors showing pictures from the different pistes are located at the starting station of the gondola, providing people with the information regarding the wind and temperature conditions before ascending the slopes. During the summer months, Bansko once again becomes a place for the mountain lovers, hikers, rock climbers, cavers and nature enthusiasts who come to this area to enjoy the clear air and admire the numerous historical sights and beautiful views. In the summer, Bansko is a bustling cultural centre where many international and national festivals take place. Folk singing and dancing, craft making , wood carving, icon painting and music playing can all be found here.
